A Day in the Life of a Dental Hygienist

north vancouver family dentistry

Ever since the first dental hygienist was licensed to practice in the United States in 1917, dental hygienists have played a critical role in the field of dentistry, especially in preventing oral disease. Take a look at what a typical day for a dental hygienist looks like below!

Before the Appointment

Dental hygienists get to know their patients by thoroughly reviewing their histories and charts before they see them. This serves two purposes: first, to prepare the dental hygienist to deliver the proper care that the patient needs, and second, so they can help the patient have a smooth and comfortable dental experience that is as stress-free as possible.

During the Appointment

The hygienist will talk over the patient’s medical history, take dental X-rays as needed, and assess the patient’s teeth and gums. They will ask the patient if they are experiencing any issues or have any concerns before performing a thorough cleaning of their teeth, which involves examining the gums for any signs of gingivitis, removing tartar buildup, flossing between their teeth, and finishing up with a polishing.

After the dentist has a chance to assess the patient’s teeth, the hygienist will often administer a fluoride treatment to ensure that teeth have an added layer of protection to prevent the formation of decay and cavities. They will also perform any necessary follow-up procedures that the dentist requests like taking impressions of the patient’s teeth. A dental hygienist will also instruct the patient on specific ways that they can maintain proper oral health at home depending on their situation, as well as show younger patients proper brushing and flossing technique.

And of course, the dental hygienist will wrap up the appointment by providing a goodie bag of essential dental items, including a new toothbrush, a small toothpaste sample, and floss!
